All said and done, this router turns in a respectable performance as a router, and the extra features are great for enthusiasts. Being able to fit all of that functionality in there and making it compact enough to facilitate carrying an internal HDD is not something to sneer at. If converging so much into a single device is the template for wireless routers in the future, the DIR-685 sure is a pioneer even if some of its features still need polishing. At the moment though, the high price and lack of dual-band operation is a deterrent and stands between it and an even better rating.
+ : LCD; internal hard-drive bay; built-in FTP and BitTorrent software. - : Expensive; slow wireless and NAS throughput; hard-drive bay limited to 2.5-inch drives.
